Major Events International Hosts & Federations Summit Panel

‘You. Smart. Thing.’ CEO, Chris Thompson, chairs the Major Events International Hosts & Federations Summit panel on Sustainable Winter Sports.

The 6th edition of the Hosts and Federations Summit is taking place in Lausanne, Switzerland, 12-15 July. The 2023 edition is designed to deliver a highly focused engagement programme for expert suppliers, rights holders, international federations and host cities.

I’m delighted to have been invited to moderate this panel covering sustainability and winter sports in the build up to the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. As Games Executive Director, Christophe Dubi, International Olympic Committee, commented in his opening keynote of the Hosts and Federations Summit, sports federations and organising committees need to take a longer term view.

The panel including, Alessandro Ciro Sciretti, CEO, Torino 2025 FISU World University Games, Laurent Petrynka, President, International School Sport Federation, and Katie Kennedy, Director, Event Development, Explore Edmonton (home of The Style Experience FIS Snowboard Big Air World Cup and core partner for Canada Snowboard), will address the following questions:

  1. What are the three biggest contributors to carbon emissions for your destination/organisation/events?
  2. What do you think are the key factors that are necessary to ensure winter sports can achieve environmental objectives?
  3. Can you give us an example of a specific technology, operational approach, or initiative that you have put in place to help achieve sustainability?
  4. Are there any new sustainability-focused technologies or activities that you’re aware of that you don’t currently have in place, but that you expect to deploy in the future?
  5. From your organisation’s perspective, what is the financial business case for investing in sustainability – do you have a ‘green line’ in your budget?

The MEI Hosts & Federations Summit Travel Assistant
