As the excitement builds for Euro 2024, football fans from around the world are preparing for an unforgettable summer of sport, culture and adventure.

This year, the tournament will be hosted in Germany, a country renowned for its efficient public transport system, stunning cities and rich football heritage. Beyond the on-field excitement, Euro 2024 promises not only thrilling matches but also an opportunity to explore Germany with ease, thanks to a special initiative that offers free public transport to all ticket holders. The tournament is also making significant strides in sustainability, particularly by addressing Scope 3 emissions. These indirect greenhouse gas emissions, resulting from activities along an organisation’s value chain, are a major focus of Euro 2024’s environmental efforts.

Understanding Scope 3 Emissions

Scope 3 emissions are often the largest part of an organisation’s carbon footprint. They encompass all indirect emissions that occur in an organisation’s value chain, such as those from transportation, waste management and the production of goods and services.

For Euro 2024, these emissions include:

  • Spectator Travel: Millions of fans travelling to and from matches.
  • Team Logistics: The transportation of teams, their equipment and support staff.
  • Outsourced Event Operations: Emissions from temporary infrastructure and energy use during the event.

According to the recent Global Sustainable Sport article up to 98% of emissions from major sporting events come from Scope 3 sources, primarily spectator travel and logistics. Michele Uva, UEFA Director for Social and Environmental Sustainability, emphasised: “The UEFA EURO 2024 vision is to be the reference for event sustainability in the world of sports and a driving force for sustainable development through our ESG strategy. We are determined to be part of the solution to measure and reduce the impact of football on the environment and leverage the power of our sport to raise awareness and catalyse action”.

Addressing Scope 3 Emissions at Euro 2024

Recognising the significance of Scope 3 emissions, Euro 2024 organisers are implementing several initiatives to mitigate these impacts. One key strategy is promoting the use of public transport and encouraging eco-friendly travel options.

Free Public Transport for Ticket Holders: To reduce emissions, Euro 2024 is offering free public transport for all ticket holders on match days. This initiative encourages fans to use trains, buses and trams instead of private vehicles, significantly cutting down the event’s overall carbon footprint. Germany’s extensive and efficient public transport network makes this an effective solution. Match ticket holders are entitled to a 36 Hour Travel Pass for the entire regional public transport network at no additional cost, from 06:00 on your matchday until 18:00 the following day. Your 36 Hour Travel Pass is included in your free Fan Pass
(available from 3 June!)

Teams Travelling by Train: Participating national teams will also travel by train between match locations, reducing the carbon footprint associated with team logistics. Martin Kallen, CEO of UEFA Events SA stated, “Sustainable means that each team plays twice within one cluster. This allows the teams to get to know the stadiums and gives fans the opportunity to stay in the same area for two matches. It is a very important part of our sustainability strategy, and when the teams and fans travel we would like them to do so by bus or train”.
